Birds & Walks in Iceland

June is a wonderful month in Iceland. Winter is barely over in the mountains but in the valleys and along lake and shoreline, spring comes and goes in a few frantic weeks. The birdlife is amazing and the clear arctic air and 24 hours of daylight give the landscape a vivid depth.

This is our special trip, designed for walkers who would like an unhurried look at the natural habitat.

We visit several fjord locations, mostly very much off the beaten track and some only known to us via our longstanding local contacts. The bird activity at this time of year is prolific. In the fjords we should see redwing, whimbrel, golden plover, redshank, snipe, ptarmigan and maybe a gyr falcon. On the coast the ubiquitous eider will be hugging the shorelines and from a boat trip, puffins and other auks will be perched on sea cliffs. At a remote farmhouse we will be dive bombed by great and arctic skuas and in Myvatn's rich breeding ground we may encounter the great northern diver, harlequin duck and barrow's goldeneye.

The flowers too, are abundant in June with the long daylight hours advancing buds almost as we look. On our final days in Myvatn we will be surrounded by bubbling mud and steaming fissures in a landscape which in geological terms only happened yesterday.
