Naked New Zealand
Our adventurous journey across both Islands. We hike and sometimes kayak, wade and swim through the whole range of New Zealand's 'great outdoors': volcanoes; rainforest; hot springs; summits; gorges; fiords, alpine mountains and beaches. This trip is for those who like to live life in the raw!
At Rotorua, New Zealand's geothermal centre we hike through rainforest, soak in 'hot' rivers and kayak across crater lakes. Further south we walk part of the famous Tongariro Alpine 'crossing' and climb part way up the iconic cone-shaped volcano, Mt Taranaki (aka Mt Egmont).
Now to the South Island! We fly from Wellington to Queenstown and only 2 days later are kayaking on Milford Sound - can you believe that?! A 3 day hike reaches a high saddle with views of Fiordland's spectacular mountains. Quieter times follow in the gentler Catlins where seals, dolphins and penguins may be seen from a beachside camp.
We even manage a biking day along the famous Otago Rail Trail before heading back to the Southern Alps and hiking beyond our bushline camp to a high viewpoint. From the Mt Cook valley a walk onto an adjacent ridge barely a stones' throw from the great mountain itself is an absolute must. Time for a final overnight hike on Mt Somers before we cruise down onto the Canterbury Plain and Christchurch.

BAY of ISLANDS
The Bay of Islands, a sheltered bay sprinkled with islands of all sizes and accessible by road or plane from Auckland is a perfect place to recover from jetlag or wind down at the end of your trip. This is where the first settlers arrived and there are beaches, boat trips, dolphins & whales, snorkelling and walks to rocky headlands and though mangrove swamps.

PACIFIC EXTENSIONS
PACIFIC ISLANDS STOPOVER
If you are coming all the way from Europe, do consider a few days in the exotic South Pacific before or after your trip. Air New Zealand has the best options for Pacific stopovers en route to/from New Zealand. Our own favourite is the Cook Islands, with very much a New Zealand style, NZ$ currency, relaxed living etc. The main island, Raratonga, is a classic Pacific island, 35kms circumference, with palm fringed beaches, coral lagoons and a rugged mountainous interior.
