Trekking in BhutanChomolhari and LayaA vigorous trek beneath Chomolhari reveals Bhutan's second highest peak at 7314m. From here we cross a series of high passes to reach the remote village of Laya. Relaxing in hot springs and cultural visits at Punakha, Bhutan's ancient capital, and Thimpu, the modern capital, round off this challenging journey which allows enough time to absorb Bhutan's distinctive culture. From the moment of arrival in Paro it is clear that Bhutan is different to anywhere else - local people resplendent in national dress welcome us outside an airport building with intricately carved woodwork in the traditional style. We acclimatise in Paro with a walk up to Takstang (Tiger's nest) Monastery, perched on a cliff and a good warm up. The trek begins and we pass through colourful remote villages and camp beneath Chomolhari's east face. Heading east, a run of tough days takes us over four high passes, the highest Sinche La at 5050m. Dates have been chosen for the best chance of good weather conditions to cross the high passes, so do not necessarily coincide with any festivals.
