Trekking in BhutanThe Thousand Lakes TrekAcclimatisation begins in Paro with a visit to Takstang - Tiger's nest Monastery. On trek we follow wooded hills and open ridges to reach a collection of high altitude lakes with panoramic views of the eastern Himalaya including Chomolhari (7315m) and Kanchenjunga (8586m). The trek has some short but tough days due to the altitude. Given good weather and acclimatisation we hope to climb Jomo, (4716m), an easy scramble up rocky slopes, though this depends on our local guides burning juniper as an offering to Jomo's goddess. From a final high point there are unobstructed views on the horizon: Kanchenjunga, Chomolhari and Jitchu Drake as well as Gankar Punsum (7541m), Bhutan's highest peak, the highest unclimbed massif in the world. Linking with the colourful Thimpu Tsechu (Festival), this trip has a good balance of culture and activity.
