Pakistan - Rupal Valley, Nanga Parbat

Trekking in Pakistan

Hunza and Nanga Parbat Twin Treks

Hunza, indisputably beautiful and Nanga Parbat, immense and awesome! Two progressive treks combined with a breathtaking ride up the Karakoram Highway provide a classic Pakistan experience.

To drive the Karakoram Highway along the banks of the mighty Indus as it carves a swathe through the mountains of northern Pakistan is a highlight. The final gorge reveals the irrigated green and fertile apricot orchards of Hunza.

Our first trek ascends steadily with an exciting crossing of the crevassed Passu glacier and reaches a high vantage point (4185m) where we rest for a day to absorb a panorama of the surrounding 7000m peaks, Shispar, Ultar, Passu and Rakaposhi.

After relaxation (and carpet buying?) in Karimabad, Hunza's attractive capital, we return down the KKH and through the stupendous Astor Gorge to Nanga Parbat's Rupal valley. We trek past high summer villages and barley fields to reach Herligkoffer base camp underneath the massive Rupal face. Continuing up the valley we make two further camps by the lateral moraine of the Mazeno glacier. A tough climb up the boulder field and a final snow slope leads to the Mazeno La (5377m) from where, surrounded by sparkling snow peaks, we can look over and down the Loiba glacier towards Nanga Parbat's Diamer Face.
