A Short Walk in the Hindu Kush

An esoteric visit to the hidden kingdom of Chitral, beneath the great Himalayan giant Tirich Mir (7708m) and close to the Afghanistan border.

Following in the footsteps of Michael Palin, we meet the polo playing Chitralis and stay in the former palace of the ruling family of Chitral. In the nearby Kalash valley, live the fascinating Kalashi tribe, thought to be descendants of Alexander the Great, whose women wear black robes and embroidered long caps decorated with cowrie shells, ornaments and beads.

Our 6-7 day trek crosses two passes at 3700m with panoramic mountain views. We visit small villages with terraced fields, shepherds encampments, cedar forests and alpine gorges. In the Chitral Gol wildlife sanctuary there is a good chance to see the very rare Kashmiri Markhor (mountain goat) with its distinctive flared spiral horns, and eagles and lammergeyers, although the snow leopard may remain more elusive.

On our return to Islamabad we spend a memorable night at Peshawar with time to go to the dentist or dive into the bazaars and markets!
