Trekking in Costa RicaCosta Rica Wild and HighFor such a small country, Costa Rica's sheer number and diversity of protected National Parks has few equals. Combining nature and activity we raft down stunning rivers, bike around volcanoes, trek out of the clouds to Chirripo (3819m) the country's highest point, hike through rich coastal rainforest at Corcovado and finally rest at tropical beaches Our first wilderness destination is the Rio Pacuare, a world-class rafting river. En-route we bike along easy trails beneath Volcan Irazu. The Pacuare is awesome and the two day rafting trip (Grade 3/4) with both languid and exciting sections, passes through virgin rainforest and dramatic gorges. The Talamanca Mountains form the backbone of Costa Rica and a 3 day trek climbs to the country's highest peak, Cerro Chirripo (3819m). We reach the rocky summit by an easy scramble, where on a clear day one can see both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. The Corcovado National Park, a rainforested peninsular jutting into the Pacific, is arguably Costa Rica's finest. We stay in the Park Ranger camps, an authentic experience and walk narrow trails - the sleeping boa constrictor, squawking multi-coloured scarlet macaws overhead, pelicans and fish eagles along the seashore, toucans and monkeys everywhere and less visible, jaguar, deer, crocodile and tapir. Finally it is time to relax at nearby Dominical beach, a lively but small township with warm seas, snorkelling and coastal walks.
