Peaks of Ecuador
The volcanoes of Ecuador, snow-capped yet lying on the equator, offer an unrivalled opportunity for climbing to high altitude with little technical expertise. This is a practical itinerary with solid training days, a trek to acclimatize and attempts on Cotopaxi (5897m) and Chimborazo (6310m).
Cotopaxi: the highest active volcano in the world, its summit dominated by an enormous crater half a kilometre across.
Chimborazo: here it will not only be good weather but stamina and fitness that will decide whether the summit of Ecuador's highest volcano is reached.
Acclimatisation: training high points on volcanoes Pichincha (4700m), Imbabura (4690m) and Illiniza Norte (5126m), three days acclimatisation hikes around the fourth highest volcano in Ecuador, Antisana (4752m) and a glacier and snow 'refresher' day before ascents.
There is also time for 'South American' relaxation in the colourful spa town of Baños and a memorable visit to Otavalo market.
