Treks and Volcanoes
Three of the best high treks around the great volcanoes of the Ecuadorian Andes culminating in an ascent of Cotopaxi (5897m) with colourful relaxation time in Cuenca, Baņos and Otavalo.
We fly down to the attractive town of Cuenca in southern Ecuador and to the lakes and mountains of the Las Cajas National Park for a good warm-up first trek along part of the Ecuadorean "Inca Road".
Better acclimatised we next head towards the glaciers of Carihuairazo and past the impressive cliffs and hanging ice fields of Chimborazo (6310m), the highest peak in Ecuador.
Finally we traverse the wide open paramo (condor country) to skirt the huge snow and ice massif of Antisana (5704m). A final pass reveals the snow-capped symmetry of Cotopaxi, where, well acclimatised and fit and using axes and crampons, there is every chance of making the summit. The ('tough+' grade) ascent however remains an option and for some it will be enough to reach the start of the glacier at 4600m.
