Hikes among the Volcanoes
A tremendous trip - varied and colourful walking in South America's friendliest country combines with vibrant markets, traditional Andean villages and the colonial splendour of 'old' Quito and Cuenca. 3 camps only. Never difficult but sometimes hard work at altitude.
This natural journey right along the 'Avenue of Volcanoes' ,the backbone of Ecuador, begins with easy acclimatisation days under the flanks of Cotopaxi. Southwards now to a high level Andean settlement and a spectacular volcanic crater lake circuit. An awesome lodge high on the flanks of the mighty Chimborazo follows, with literally breathtaking walking almost to the glaciers.
There is time for waterfall trails and geothermal bathing in boisterous Baños before heading down to Cuenca, Ecuador's finest city with its cobbled streets, flower and craft markets, panama hats and classical colonial architecture. Nearby is the seldom visited Las Cajas National Park with spectacular high hiking among lakes and ridges. The famous Otavalo market provides a relaxing and colourful finale to the trip UNLESS you have extended your holiday with a flight into the Pacific and the incomparable Galapagos Islands!
