Trekking in PeruThe Circuit of AlpamayoThis is a tremendous circuit of the Cordillera Blanca. We avoid the more frequented trails and cross a major pass almost every day revealing stunning close views of most of the great 6000m peaks of the Peruvian Andes. A highlight is our visit to the base camp of Alpamayo (5947m) one of the world's great mountains. Our 13 day trek, preceded by some early acclimatisation days, is remarkably sustained and amazingly varied and always on good trails. The eight exhilarating passes we cross reveal fluted snow peaks and hanging glaciers at every viewpoint. Turquoise glacial lakes in high alpine cirques drop down to broad valleys where we expect to see condors soaring. High Andean villages, where rugged campesinos tend hard-earned crops of potatoes and barley, and graze sheep, alpacas and horses, complete the tapestry. As we tiptoe across our final rocky pass, Punta Yanayuca (4850m - joint highest) and descend into the lupin laden meadows of the Ulta valley, there will be little doubt that we have seen the Cordillera Blanca at its very best.
