Climbing Parinacota, Bolivia

Trekking in Bolivia

Thin Air 6000

Astride the Bolivia Chile border, the volcano Parinacota rises in perfect snow-capped symmetry to 6342m at the northern end of the Atacama desert. Stable weather and secure, hard snow at a steady angle combined with good fitness will give an excellent chance of success.

Time first for the best of Bolivia and we begin in Copacabana, on the shores of Lake Titicaca. We hike along the peninsula and a boat takes us out to the Island of the Sun, the legendary birthplace of the Incas.

Moving on to the attractive town of Sorata, we trek first into the Llampu and then the Condoriri range where from a lakeside base camp we have a choice of easy summits to practice our snow skills.

We are ready now for Parinacota. A half day drive from La Paz now to another landscape - where the volcanoes live! Next day we walk in to base camp at 5100m and the day after hope to summit after a 6-7 hour climb up the final snowfield.
