Trekking in Chile

Atacama 6000

Our exciting high altitude expedition to 20,000ft in the Atacama desert, Northern Chile. We hike through a dazzling landscape of wide open spaces, isolated volcanoes, saltpans, geysers, hot springs, lagoons and desert landforms. Our acclimatisation progress is purposeful and effective as we climb three volcanoes, Lascar (5630m), Licancabur (5916m) and finally the highest, Volcan San Pedro (6145m) 20,155ft.

Our early base is the desert town of San Pedro de Atacama where we hike to traditional desert settlements, descend the 'Valle de la Luna,' visit the geothermal springs and geysers of El Tatio, and the expansive salt flats of Salar de Atacama. The expedition heads off further afield and we camp by emerald green lagoons visited by pink flamingos and prepare for our volcano climbs.

Our first volcano, Lascar, 5630m is a good gauge of fitness and acclimatisation before the higher ascent of Licancabur, 5916m, with Inca remains in its summit crater. Finally we reach the more remote, seldom climbed Volcan San Pedro and the opportunity to reach that magic 6000m - 20,000ft.
