Trekking in East AfricaKilimanjaro & MeruIs your dream to climb Kilimanjaro? This trip, with its acclimatising ascent of nearby Mount Meru, gives you every chance to ascend the highest mountain in Africa via the scenic Machame route. Combine this with wildlife viewing in Arusha National Park and you have a trip to remember. Our trek starts in the Arusha National Park where we invariably see giraffe, buffalo and elephant - at close range. The climb to the summit of Meru, a dormant volcano, at 4556m is optional with two subsidiary peaks around 4000m providing better acclimatisation. Between the mountain treks we view wildlife in Arusha National Park and also meet with local Chagga peoples, who live on the slopes of Kilimanjaro, to learn of their tribal culture and daily life. Our ascent of Kilimanjaro uses the attractive Machame route to emerge onto the crater rim. Skirting around the south of the main peak we acclimatise steadily. A demanding summit day is rewarded when we stand at Uhuru Peak and glow in the exhilarating feeling of being 'on top of the world'. Our longer route and slow ascent has given us a success rate of over 90%.
