Inca Trail and Lake Titicaca
Across the Andes with the Incas! We fly from Lima to Cusco to arrive breathless at 3350m into the crisp air and blue sky of the Peruvian winter. We then move slowly, acclimatising and absorbing the sights and sounds of the Andes - the Inca stonework, colonial architecture, plazas, markets, street cafes and Andean music.
Don’t underestimate the Inca Trail. It is short, (3-4 days) but high, reaching 4198m at ‘Dead Woman’s Pass’ and requires fitness and stamina. To climb the final stone steps, pass through Intipunku – ‘the Gateway of the Sun’ and see Machu Picchu will be its own reward. The hard work is now over and the real holiday begins! We travel on to Bolivia and the emerald blue Lake Titicaca visiting floating islands, home-staying with local people and hiking ancient trails on the Island of the Sun before finishing in the markets of La Paz.
Note: The secret at high altitude is not to hurry and there are extra days in Cusco at the start to best assist acclimatisation.
