Alter Inca
Perched on a remote high mountain pass, the ruins of the Inca city of Chokekirao are second only to Machu Picchu. A rewarding 8 day trek high into the Vilcabamba range reaches Chokekirao before dropping down to the Urubamba valley, the gateway to our second destination, Machu Picchu!
At first two days in Cusco (3350m) to acclimatise and begin to absorb the sights and sounds of the Andes - the Inca stonework, colonial architecture, plazas, markets and street cafes and Andean music.
Our trek begins near the Inca stronghold of Ollantaytambo. We set off into the Vilcabamba mountains above the raging snow fed waters of the Apurimac river on our Inca pilgrimage to Chokekirao where it has been suggested, Tupac Amaru, the last Inca, was raised by Inca priestesses. This area is still rarely visited.
Our trek ends in the Urubamba valley near Agua Calientes. High above us, nestling on a flattened ridge surrounded by mountains lies another Inca city - Machu Picchu!
