The Fjord Trail
The mountains of east Iceland rise dramatically from the sea to over 1000m providing some of the most beautiful coastal mountain scenery in the country. We trek from fjord to fjord along the shoreline, over high and sometimes snowy passes and down wild flower and bird rich valleys staying in remote huts and hostels. Except for two days when we carry sleeping bags and food, our baggage is transported by small boat and jeep. On one occasion we rendezvous with a boat to take us around a headland into a remote fjord. We are dived on by aggressive terns, meet great flocks of breeding eider at every inlet and we expect a close encounter with puffins.
If you have time after the trip do consider some independent sightseeing - spend one or two nights in Reykjavik, hire a car/catch a bus to geothermal Myvatn or return to Reykjavik via Iceland’s spectacular south coast, where glaciers meet the sea.
